Waste Management is the most thoughtful & opportunistic area in India as it is having a direct impact on our health and environment. If waste is not managed & utilized properly, it leads to Soil pollution (creation of toxic land-fills), Air pollution (burning of garbage) and Water pollution (lakes, rivers getting choked and polluted due to dumping of waste). Clean and non-contaminated Air, Soil and Water are all 3 basic needs for human survival. Polluted air leads to breathing problems and other related medical problems. Contaminated Soil make the land infertile, useless for any cultivation and also has an impact on our food chain. Land is becoming expensive, precious resource and we cannot keep creating more and more landfills. Water pollution leads to contamination of water supply for drinking and agriculture purposes and also floods during excessive rains. The rate at which waste is getting generated is increasing rapidly day by day and all of our infrastructure and natural resources are either running full capacity or facing challenges to accept more and more waste.

Majority of our waste been collected is in a mixed form in one single "famous" black garbage bag. Mixed waste is leading to huge man made mountains (landfills) and which are toxic due to mixed waste.

Waste Management

There are 3 key steps for effective waste management.

Segregation: Waste management becomes simple, effective and clean when waste is segregated at source. 60% to 70% of our total waste generated is organic and can be composted into an organic fertilizer (Compost). 20% of our waste can be recycled. This leaves only 5% to 10% going to landfills as rejects. At the end of this article you will find web links which shows how waste can be segregated easily.

Composting: Food waste which accounts to around 60% to 70% of our total waste when segregated methodically at source can be composted at individual or community level into organic fertilizer (compost). It's very easy to learn & practice composting at individual level. Sustainable Living integrates collection of Brown leaves through its Brown Leaf team. Brown/Dry leaves balance the moisture in your compost & make composting convenient free of any odor or foul smell. To learn composting easily refer links at the end of the Article. To know more how you can get Brown Leaves please click here.

Reduce: Reuse has a limit and Recycling has costs involved like collection, transportation, energy and other costs. Hence "Reduce" waste should be our mantra as much as possible rather than Recycle and Reuse. Reduce waste by stop using plastic bags, disposable cutlery and any other ways and means where we can reduce waste been generated and entering our planet. Carry our own water bottle, use reusable cutlery like steel utensils or bio-degradable cutlery like leaf plates are simple and easy means of reducing waste. Segregate , Compost and Reduce should be our 3 steps mantra for an effective waste management to have a better, cleaner and greener Pune & planet for our family , kids and future generations. We have to handover Pune & this planet in same health as we inherited from our ancestors.

Organic Waste Management
